Questioning the Chancellor on the Tax Credit system
Barbara Follett will question the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the House of Commons on Thursday 10th November about his plans to improve public understanding of the Tax Credit system.
Mrs Follett said “Over 8000 Stevenage families have benefited from Tax Credits, but, sadly, a few have had serious problems with refunding overpayments. The majority of these were caused by people not understanding that, if they get Tax Credits, they must tell the Inland Revenue when their financial circumstances change.
It is not the Tax Credits themselves that cause the problem but the over complex system of claiming them. I am going to ask the Chancellor to simplify and improve the information that people are given about Tax Credits so that they have a clear understanding, at the outset, of their rights and responsibilities in this area.”
Mrs Follett will question the Chancellor of the Exchequer during Treasury Questions in the House of Commons at 10:30 on Thursday 10th November.
