SAFE at last

Stevenage MP Barbara Follett was delighted to be invited to the opening of the new SAFE Community Centre in Pound Avenue on Friday 8th July.

SAFE (Sish Lane Area Friendly Enterprise) is an innovative Stevenage scheme supported by the police and local people.  It was set up three years ago to promote responsible behaviour amongst neighbourhood youngsters and teach them new skills.

SAFE organises activities for young people aged between six and sixteen. These include football matches, homework, cheerleading, art, snooker, table tennis, writers' and first aid clubs. They also arrange indoor games and outdoor trips.

Mrs Follett was also delighted to unveil a plaque recognising the contribution Connie Rees MBE and her husband Huw have made to the success of SAFE.  Mrs Rees is joint President of the scheme with her husband, Huw.

Mrs Follett said “ The SAFE scheme is a real, community-based initiative. It owes a great deal to the hard work and vision of Connie Rees and her band of dedicated volunteers. I am proud to be associated with it”.
