Help to Make Poverty History

Stevenage MP Barbara Follett is urging her constituents to join her in supporting the Make Poverty History campaign in the week leading up to the Live 8 concerts on Saturday 2nd July and the G8 Summit of powerful world leaders at Gleneagles in Scotland from 6th to 8th July.

Make Poverty History is a UK alliance of charities, trade unions, campaigning groups and celebrities who are driving forward the struggle against poverty and injustice. It is calling for urgent and meaningful policy change on three critical and inextricably linked areas – trade, debt and aid.

Several years ago, global leaders agreed eight goals which would halve world poverty by 2015.  Sadly, progress in meeting the goals is slow and the result is that the gap between rich and poor countries is wider than ever.  A recent report for the United Nations confirmed that it is still possible to meet the goals if rich countries get serious about helping poorer nations.

The symbol of the Make Poverty History campaign is a simple White Band – worn around your wrist, your arm or anywhere you like that it can be seen!  To find out how to get a band visit http://www.makepovertyhistory.org/whiteband/

Saturday 2nd July 2005 will see “Live 8” – a series of 10 concerts involving 100 artists, a million spectators, 2 billion viewers and one message – to get those eight world leaders in that one room at the G8 Summit to stop 30,000 children dying every single day of extreme poverty. Go to www.live8live.com for more details.

Mrs Follett said “Wear the band and watch the bands on July 2nd.  Then do all you can to Make Poverty History.”
