Thanks to Royal Mail staff

Barbara Follett MP visited the Royal Mail’s delivery office in Stevenage at 6:30am this morning (20 December) to see for herself how local postmen and women are pulling out all the stops to help Royal Mail deliver this year’s bumper festive postbag.

Over Christmas, the Royal Mail delivers around 110 million pieces of post a day.  That is 27 million more than on a normal day.  Last Christmas, Britain’s postmen and women made sure that a staggering 2.1 billion cards, letters and packages got to 27 million addresses throughout the country.

In the Stevenage area, postal workers deliver about 8.1 million pieces of post a day at Christmas.  To cope with the huge increase in volume of mail, around 100 extra staff are taken on in December to help the 900 regular workers.

Mrs Follett said “The Six Hills Sorting Office was a hive of industry at 6:30am on a cold and frosty morning.  We owe a great deal to the men and women who work so hard, and so long, at Christmas to make sure that we get our cards and parcels”.
