Supporting the energy saving campaign

Barbara Follett MP has joined a long list of distinguished names on a parliamentary campaign (early day motion) to call on people to save energy by turning off their electrical appliances whenever possible.

The MP was inspired by last week's 'Big Turn Off' campaign run by the Energy Saving Trust (EST), which gives free advice to the public on ways to save money, and even qualify for household grants, when attempting to use energy more efficiently.

Mrs Follett said MP said “I want to encourage individuals to think about the consequences of their everyday use of energy.  The truth is that household appliances such as televisions and radios will use almost as much energy in a 'standby' state as when they are in full use. Without realising it, many people are throwing money away, and damaging our environment in the process."

From this week, Barbara Follett MP has instructed her offices to join the 'Big Turn Off' and is inviting people in Stevenage to follow her example.

"The energy wasted in our homes produces carbon dioxide emissions, one of the main contributors to climate change” said the MP.

The Energy Savings Trust is a non-profit making organisation which was established by government and private business after the 1992 Rio Earth Summit.  It is promoting five easy-to-follow energy saving measures, which could save every household in Stevenageover £40 a year if they are all adopted. These measures are:

  • Turn down your thermostat by just one degree
  • Replace and ordinary light bulb with a low energy one
  • Turn off TVs, radios etc when not is use - instead of leaving them on 'stand-by'
  • Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms
  • Only boil enough water in the kettle to meet your needs

"Making savings to our bills, and the amount of energy we use, now couldn't be easier" added Mrs Follett.
