Turning groceries into computers
Barbara Follett MP visited the Tesco Extra store in Stevenage town centre on Friday 22nd October to present pupils and staff from local schools with computer equipment as part of Tesco’s “Computers for Schools” scheme.
Tesco “Computers for Schools” has been running since 1992 and has delivered over £84 million worth of computer equipment to schools across the UK. This equipment includes over 52,000 state-of-the-art computers and over 550,000 additional items of computer related equipment. The most requested items of equipment were digital cameras, digital movie creators, microscopes and interactive children’s encyclopedias.
The scheme ran in Tesco stores for 10 weeks from 23rd February 2004. Customers received one voucher for every £10 spent in Tesco stores and petrol stations and then donated the vouchers to the school of their choice. 86% of UK schools registered to take part in the scheme – over 30,000 schools.
Mrs Follett met pupils from Camps Hill Primary School, Rectory Lane Nursery School, St Vincent de Paul RC Primary School and Woolenwick Infant and Nursery School and said “This is a very worthwhile scheme and I am proud to be associated with it”.
