School joins the Giving Nation
Barbara Follett, MP for Stevenage, visited Lonsdale School last week to see how they were getting involved in Giving Nation, a UK-wide initiative encouraging 11-16 year olds to switch on to charity and the community.
Giving Nation was designed to support the citizenship curriculum and is funded by the Department for Education and Skills and the Home Office Active Communities Unit. It aims to help young people understand the power of giving and the importance of charities in shaping a fair and inclusive world. It promotes initiative, participation and choice – giving young people the tools they need to tackle the issues they care about.
At a special assembly, the pupils of Lonsdale School reported on the type of volunteer work they had done throughout the year and how much money they have raised for various charities in Uganda.
Mrs Follett said “This was one of the most inspirational school assemblies I have ever attended. The pupils of Lonsdale School have every excuse to just think about themselves. But, instead, they are thinking about others. They are an example to us all”.
