MP visits Royal Mail

Barbara Follett MP visited the Royal Mail’s delivery office in Stevenage at six o’clock on Thursday morning (18th December) to see for herself how local postmen and women deal with the huge amount of cards and packages we send out at this time of year.

Over Christmas, the Royal Mail delivers about 110 million pieces of post a day. That is 28 million more than on a normal day. Last Christmas, Britain’s postmen and women made sure that a staggering 2.1 billion cards, letters and packages got to 27 million addresses throughout the country.

In the Stevenage area, postal workers deliver about 8.1 million pieces of post a day at Christmas. To cope with the huge increase in volume of mail, around 100 extra staff are taken on in December to help the 900 regular workers.

Mrs Follett said “It was wonderful to see the mountains of mail being dealt with so efficiently and expertly. After spending an hour and a half with the men and women who work at the Six Hills sorting office my admiration for the work they do knows no bounds. We owe them a great deal. Especially at Christmas”
