Community challenge gives local residents new garden

Barbara Follett MP attended the official opening of a newly refurbished garden at the St Nicholas Community Centre on Friday 7th November 2003.

The garden was refurbished by a team of 27 employees from GlaxoSmithKline in Stevenage. Using the services of Kaboura Training, a locally based training company that specialises in “community challenge” type projects and team building activities, the employees spent one day in October working together to build the garden as part of a challenging teambuilding day.

To fund the project, the team raised £800 in cash donations and approximately £3,000 worth of other sponsorship such as equipment and materials.

Andy Cunningham, Manager of the GlaxoSmithKline team said “There was a real sense of achievement from everybody involved. Not only did we have a great team building day, but we have provided something of value to the local community as well”.

Community Centre Manager, Pam Shaw, said “We would like to extend our thanks to GlaxoSmithKline and Kaboura Training for the wonderful improvements carried out to our garden”.

Mrs Follett said “I salute the GlaxoSmithKline workers for the work they have done. They have made a very real, and lasting, contribution to the greater good of Stevenage”.
