Shopworkers deserve respect
Barbara Follett MP is backing Usdaw, the shopworkers’ union, in their campaign to protect shopworkers from violence and abuse at work.
The latest British Retail Consortium Crime Survey indicated an alarming 75% increase in violence against retail staff since 1999. Usdaw’s own survey of the experiences of their members working in retail shows that over the last 12 months:
• 47% reported physical attacks or assaults on staff
• 72% reported staff being threatened with violence
• 86% reported incidents of verbal abuse
Mrs Follett said “I am appalled by the violence and abuse that shopworkers have to deal with. No one should have to put up with such behaviour. That is why I am support Usdaw’s campaign”.
