Local youth project drastically reduces "youth nuisance"

Stevenage MP Barbara Follett visited the Education and Youth Service Project in Bell Lane on Friday 7th March to see the work it is doing with young people from the Emperor's Head area of the town.

Residents of Chells Manor reported problems with young people hanging out in the shopping area near the Emperor's Head. Several nuisance issues developed and Stevenage Borough Council's Community Development team decided they had to do something, so they started to work with young people and the local community to find interesting and educational alternatives to hanging out on street corners.

This is how "Young Emperors People" came into being. It offers a variety of activities for 11 to 17 year olds, including a drama group, computer and music technology sessions, football coaching as well as trips and outdoor events. Funding for the project comes from the Joint Local Committee, the Home Office and the Police Initiative Fund. However, more money is urgently needed.

Mrs Follett said "It is really refreshing to see young people taking responsibility for their own lives and helping to develop such an interesting and worthwhile project".
