Minister for Europe in Stevenage for debut speech
The new Minister for Europe, Denis MacShane, chose Stevenage for his debut speech on Friday 1st November. He was the main speaker at a Business Breakfast hosted by local MP Barbara Follett at Knebworth Barns.
The subject of the Business Breakfast was "Europe, Business and the Future". Other speakers included Richard Howitt MEP, Eric Peacock, Chief Executive of Business Link Hertfordshire and Kerry McCarthy, Regional Organiser of the East of England in Europe.
Dr MacShane spoke about the basic things that must be right in order to make Europe work for business: Outcomes, Openness, Opportunities and Optimism.
Richard Howitt said "Today demonstrates that Stevenage businesses have a real share in Europe, and a genuine opportunity to benefit from new trade and EU funding sources".
Barbara Follett said "Europe is hugely important for the economy of Stevenage and I was very glad that Denis MacShane was able to find time to come and talk to us about it."
Profits from the Breakfast will be donated to the Domestic Violence Forum.
