Community Safety in the spotlight

Stevenage MP Barbara Follett attended a meeting organised by Stevenage Neighbourhood Watch Forum last week to discuss all aspects of Community Safety.

Topics discussed included how young people can contribute to crime prevention, schools working with local communities, community safety for senior citizens and mobile phone theft. Representatives from the police, local councils, residents associations, community groups, local neighbourhood watch schemes and Thomas Alleyne School attended.

Arthur Howard, Secretary of Stevenage Neighbourhood Watch Forum, updated the meeting on their recent activities. They are currently producing a Community Safety Calendar for 2003 which will be delivered to every home in Stevenage.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Follett said "Neighbourhood Watch is an example to us all. Crime has to be fought by the community as a whole. We, as members of society, have responsibilities as well as rights. Neighbourhood Watch is about responsible citizenship and I am happy to support it."
