Happy 60th birthday, NHS!
Barbara Follett visited the Lister Hospital on Coreys Mill Lane to wish the National Health Service a happy 60th birthday. Launched in 1948, the NHS was set up by the Labour Government of Clement Atlee to provide health care for everyone in the United Kingdom.
During her visit, Ms Follett gave a birthday card and chocolates to staff at the hospital’s Accident & Emergency ward.
Ms Follett also spoke with Lister boss and Chief Executive of the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, Mr Nick Carver, about what the next sixty years might hold for the hospital.
Ms Follett said, “I am especially proud of the NHS because they saved the life of my son when he was gravely ill with meningitis. This great British institution will always have my thanks.
The Lister has been looking after the people of our town for two generations and is an important part of the NHS story. I have no doubt that it will continue to be so in the years to come”.
Mr Carver said, “Over the coming years, significant investment will transform the Lister into the centre for acute hospital care, serving all residents in east and north Hertfordshire. It’s an exciting time for the Trust, the Lister and its staff.”
The Lister Hospital was opened by the Queen Mother in 1972. In December 2007, it was chosen as the centre for acute trauma services for East and North Hertfordshire.
