'Just Listening' report released

As some of you may remember, I held a series of Just Listening meetings in Stevenage in 2006. At the time, I thought that a report on the findings of these, along with other, similar, meetings being held across the country, would be published by the Fabian Society. Sadly, this arrangement fell through and I, like those of you who took part in the exercise have been wondering when, if ever, the report would appear. I am glad to say that it now has and you can find it on this website as an Adobe Acrobat PDF document.

Both Tessa Jowell and I are very sorry indeed about the length of time that it has taken to produce this report. This was caused by an unfortunate combination of circumstances including staff and job changes.

But, that said, I am glad that the report has finally been published. I know that its findings have informed policy formation for the past two years. Indeed, the fifteen MPs who took part in the exercise across the country often refer to the issues their constituents raised when we are discussing policy. It has also been the main reason behind a series of “listening” events run by the Government.

Personally, I found the Just Listening meetings illuminating and useful. I hope that the constituents who attended them did too. I am just sorry that the report has taken so long to appear and that it has not been published in the way promised.
